From labs to libraries

All our Biomedical Sciences programmes are jointly taught by the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences and Barts and The London, so you’ll benefit from the state-of-the-art facilities that both have to offer.

The School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences offers excellent on-campus resources to aid your studies, including newly refurbished lecture theatres, up-to-date IT facilities, and modern, well-equipped labs. It’s also home to world-class research facilities, including the Advanced Molecular Imaging Service (AMIS). Established in 2016, AMIS has received over £2.2m in investment and has more than 80 pieces of advanced molecular imaging equipment. The School also boasts sophisticated genomics and informatics research facilities.

When it comes to study space, you’ll have plenty of options: Queen Mary has three libraries across its four London campuses. Barts has two libraries, at the Whitechapel and West Smithfield campuses. Both are housed in historic buildings – the Whitechapel library was originally a neo-Gothic chapel and has medical-themed stained-glass windows, making it a unique and atmospheric study space.

Queen Mary’s largest library is based at Mile End and is open 24/7 during term time. All of our libraries have computer facilities and spaces where you can work quietly on your own or with others on group projects. You’ll also have access to the University of London’s central library in Senate House, which contains over 2 million books.

Medical Genetics, Neuroscience and Biomedical Sciences students

Medical Genetics, Neuroscience students and Biomedical Sciences will be part based at the Blizard Institute (the largest institute of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry) in Whitechapel and the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences on our Mile End campus.

From these bases, you’ll have access to the sort of state-of-the-art facilities you would expect from a world-class biomedical research and education centre.

Designed by leading architect Will Alsop, the remarkable Blizard Building is home to teaching and research facilities including open-plan laboratories, office space and the 400-seat Perrin Lecture Theatre. Inside, you’ll also find Centre of the Cell, an interactive education centre aimed at encouraging children in the local community to develop an interest in science and research. The Blizard Institute's research and education activities span broad areas of modern biomedicine, with particular expertise in cell biology, genomics, immunology, neuroscience, primary care, population health and trauma sciences.

Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics students

Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics students are jointly taught by the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences and Barts and The London.

Within Barts, the Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics programme is taught at the William Harvey Research Institute – the largest pharmacological research institute in the UK university sector and one of the largest in Europe. The Institute is home to state-of-the-art research facilities – including a National Institute for Health Research-funded Bioinformatics and Bio-repository facility – allowing our researchers to make breakthrough discoveries in therapeutics.
