The Institute of Dentistry was opened as a new facility in 2014 – the first integrated, stand-alone dental hospital and school built in the UK in 40 years.
Situated next to The Royal London Hospital, the largest new hospital in Europe and home to London’s Air Ambulance, Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is perfectly located in Whitechapel. Our students work side-by-side with pioneers in public healthcare, helping to change the lives of people across the world.
The Institute of Dentistry houses state-of-the-art facilities, providing one of the most modern learning environments for dental education of any UK dental hospital. New postgraduate study and research facilities are available in the state-of-the-art Blizard building, as well as the Institute of Dentistry.
The Institute of Dentistry contains a clinical skills laboratory, which closely simulates the real clinical experience and is an invaluable learning facility, helping new students prepare for patient care work.

In 2020, we opened new clinical research facilities including the biologic sample laboratory at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR).
The Director of COCR, Professor Nikos Donos said, “the addition of these facilities demonstrates the commitment of the IOD in promoting high quality clinical research and in establishing COCR as one of the leaders in this area”.
The centre’s mission is to improve oral health by conducting clinical trials and experimental medicine research, as well as providing postgraduate training for oral health professionals in research methodology and clinical implementation of innovative treatment modalities.
