Queen Mary Geography Society: everything you need to know

Danial Naqvi studied BA Human Geography and was President of the Queen Mary Geography Society 2018/19. We sat down to learn more about the Society and how it works.

Can you tell us about Geography Society? Who’s it for, and what does it do?

The Geography Society aims to bridge the gap between academics and students through social, professional and charity events. We feel that your best experience is an integrated one where you feel at home and able to ask for help whenever you need it. Anyone who is on the Geography or Environmental Science course can join and those who are interested in Geography can also benefit.

What made you want to join the Geography Society?

I chose to join the Geography Society because I wanted to feel more a part of my community. I wanted to breathe Geography and help the Society make the School and the learning experience better for everyone.

What’s been the most exciting thing you’ve done? Or a favourite memory?

The Learning and Development Initiative was a School-Society partnership and a flagship project which aimed to understand the reasons for the engagement gap in the School. It put forward recommendations and I was proud to lead the team that delivered it to the Head of School, Principal and Students' Union President.

My best memory has to be the Freshers’ Week of my presidency, getting to know everyone and forming strong bonds for the future.

Has the Geography Society helped you build new skills? Do you think it will benefit your future career?

I learned communication and negotiation skills especially that I wouldn’t get anywhere else. The Society has helped to develop my competencies and show employers that I have a plethora of skills ready for any job.

Finally, any advice for new students thinking of joining? What’s the main benefit?

It’s the best money you’ll spend in the year. It opens up your network and all the opportunities are there for you. It’s a chance to be part of a community like no other. The incoming president has grown to appreciate everything leadership entails and it’ll be a great year, I’m sure.
