Originally published in 1978, "For a New Geography" is a milestone in the history of spatial theory and critical geography. Milton Santos (1926-2001) was one of the most creative theorists and analysts of space in the 20th century, and his 1978 book set the terms of decades of work to come. This online roundtable and Q&A will draw on a series of reviews of Archie Davies' new translation of "For a New Geography", which were recently published in the journal "Dialogues in Human Geography".
The panellists will put Santos' ideas to work in assessing the state of intellectual and political life in Brazil following the second round of the Presidential elections on October 30th.
Professor Rafael Sanzio A. dos Anjos (Geography, Universidade de Brasília) is one of Brazil's leading scholars of Afro-Brazilian space, and Director of the Center for Applied Cartography and Geographic Information (CIGA) at the University of Brasília from 2000 to 2022.
Professor Maite Conde (Brazilian Studies and Visual Culture, University of Cambridge). Her research focuses on Brazilian culture, with a particular emphasis on cinema. Specifically, her work has engaged with questions concerning the relationship between cinema, literature and modernity in Brazil.
Professor Alex Ratts is a poet, writer and Geographer (University of Goias). He has written extensively on the history of Black Brazilian thought.
Professor Kanishka Goonewardena (Geography, University of Toronto). His research interests include critical theory and Marxist philosophy, architecture and urban planning, and colonialism, imperialism, nationalism.
Associate Professor Mariana Lamego (Georgraphy, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro). She has written widely on the history of Brazilian geographical ideas.
Associate Professor Michelle Buckley (Geography, University of Toronto). She is an urban and economic geographer whose research lies at the intersections of real estate, work and employment, and labour migration. She is Book Review Forum Editor at "Dialogues in Human Geography".
Dr Archie Davies, Lecturer in Geography and Fellow of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (Queen Mary University of London) will chair the webinar.
