My name is S M Fahim Al-Faruqui and I'm from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I graduated from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) with an MSc degree in Wireless Networks in 2009. With my past work experience and a QMUL master’s degree, it was not hard for me to secure a job as an ICT engineer in a renowned bank on return to my home country.Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is based in one of the world’s most lively, exciting and multicultural city – London. Queen Mary attracts students from many different backgrounds, making it one of the most international universities in the world. Its diversity gives any student the chance to enrich his/her culture and meet a wide range of new people.
My time at QMUL has been one of the most remarkable periods in my life. I can recall all my lecturers were extensively knowledgeable and well-established in their field and provided attractive learning environment. The online discussions for the courses with lecturers on the QMUL intranet system were really helpful. Both the academic and administrative members are always ready to help students.
The Library is massive and has a vast collection of books from almost every domain. It has a wonderful study environment and books can be borrowed using self-service. I spent several late nights studying at the library which was a unique experience for me.
The engineering facilities are also well-equipped. I passed a good amount of time at ITIL lab.
I liked the Careers Centre. The university has a well-organized Students Union which runs vast ranges of activities, events and clubs. I met wonderful people from around the globe, developed variety of skills and benefited greatly from almost everything that London can offer! It was a very busy and challenging year.
Choosing the right university is a life-changing decision. I am more than happy to give advice and tips to the prospective students who wish to study at QMUL. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or concerns!
BSc Business Management
"I chose to study at Queen Mary, University of London as it is one of the most well known and prestigious universities in the UK.
I like the structure and the inter-disciplinary nature of my course. It focuses not just on Business and Management but also incorporates other disciplines such as Politics, Philosophy, Psychology, etc.
Queen Mary has very good social, leisure and recreational facilities. It is surrounded by fast food joints and restaurants in Mile End and Stepney Green; and is only five minutes away by tube from the Westfield Shopping Mall in Stratford. From the gym, to sports clubs and other societies, there are many recreational and social activities which students can take part in on campus. There are different coffee shops and restaurants on campus, where students can go and hangout with their friends when they are on a break.
I am an active member at Qmotion (the gym that is run by the Student Union), where I like to workout in my spare time. I am also the Project Manager of the Queen Mary Entrepreneurs Society, as I am interested in business and enjoy organising new events."
MSc Investment and Finance
Muhammad is currently Associate Manager, Institutional Equity Sales and Trading, City Brokerage Limited.
"Apart from Queen Mary's high reputation in teaching standards, the location of the campus in the Mile End area made the college an attractive place for me since exciting places in the multicultural city of London were accessible in a matter of minutes by the underground.
While I was searching for a university for my higher degree in finance, Queen Mary was one of the top ranking institutions in the UK and still is. The Department of Economics was equipped with high quality teaching staff and offered the exact course that I was looking for: MSc Finance and Investment. The college also offered fantastic on-campus accommodation facilities and the modern library was located a short walk away. Apart from Queen Mary's high reputation in teaching standards, the location of the campus in the Mile End area made the college an attractive place for me since exciting places in the multicultural city of London were accessible in a matter of minutes by the underground. It may be mentioned here that a few of my relatives graduated from Queen Mary and now working at various renowned investment banks. This has also influenced me in choosing this wonderful college.
The MSc Finance and Investment was a very interesting course to study at the time of global recession. The course materials were made up-to-date and real life examples were provided in the classroom. In addition to regular coursework and lectures, guest speakers from the industry were invited to share their own job experiences with students. This has helped me to link class room teaching to real life scenarios in the best possible manner. During my study, I have come across people from different nationalities and it has been a great experience. Queen Mary has taught me to be a hard working and a patient person and this led to gaining the postgraduate degree. It is not just the degree I obtained but a lot of things came with it.
In next five years I would like to work for an asset management firm as its fund manager and if possible set up my own firm at some point in time. Frontier Markets such as Bangladesh has a lot to offer in next few years and a lot of foreign funds are already expressing their interests in the Bangladesh Stock Market."
Queen Mary University of London offers a number of scholarships to encourage excellent students from Bangladesh to study with us. Scholarships and bursaries are awarded on academic basis and available at all levels of student expect foundation programmes.
Please see our Scholarship Page for the latest information on available scholarships.
Students may also consider applying for scholarship through external bodies in Pakistan.
