My name is Andrea Eletto and I am an Italian qualified lawyer who graduated in 2018 with a Master of Law (LL.M.) in Commercial and Corporate Law. After a few years of being a litigator in Italy, I was ready for a new challenge and I decided to study abroad to explore a new legal field. My motivation behind this came from the realization that successful lawyers often excel due to their exposure and experience internationally. On my path to seeking new challenges, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) was my top choice thanks to the university’s outstanding reputation for offering high quality and practice-orientated legal degrees. I was fully convinced that the university’s LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law would offer me a stepping-stone towards reaching new career goals. After one year spent at QMUL, I can confirm it was the perfect choice. Classes were structured to provide students with the perfect balance between theoretical knowledge and practical advice. Moreover, the vibrant network of students and professors truly enhanced the latter. Lastly, the pro-active and excellent Career Service team at QMUL helped me draft and tailor job applications specific tp the British market. Ultimately, enabling me to secure a job in London. Italian students should be aware that the Anglo-Saxon university system is structurally different to the one found in continental Europe. For example, all exams are written and in particular the exams set by QMUL require the ability to critically and rigorously approach topics. The key to success lies in catalysing on the lecturers, the extensive resources and the facilities available to students. Should you have any questions about the student experience or life at QMUL, please feel free to contact me. Studying at QMUL will offer you a spectacular and engaging time with students from all over the world, in one of the most stimulating cities of the world.
Before joining Queen Mary I was working in a law firm as an associated qualified lawyer. I chose to study an LLM here because of its high ranking for arbitration and commercial comparative studies. There is a lot of support available for students at Queen Mary. I received help with organising a pre-sessional English course before the programme started right through to the exams at the end of the LLM.
Being a postgraduate student in London is amazing. I have really enjoyed both studying and having fun in London and it is a life experience that I fully recommend!
I chose Design & Innovation because of my passion for art, architecture and design as well as my interest for scientific subjects such as mathematics and physics. I picked Queen Mary because it is the only UK institution that offers this kind of engineering and design degree and I was attracted by London’s cosmopolitan cultural environment. During my time at Queen Mary I have had the opportunity to talk to professionals in the field and create a large network of contacts as well as receiving lots of advice. It is a really friendly environment to study in and the most important thing is that students' requests are always taken into account.
Queen Mary's campus feels really safe and hospitable and the halls of residence are really close to the teaching buildings. Victoria Park is a few minutes from the campus and was a really pleasant surprise and probably one of the nicest parks in London. Shoreditch and Brick Lane are also close by and are really "trendy" areas where lots of students hang out and have fun. I couldn't live anywhere else as a student!
I chose QM because of the good reputation for the Law Faculty and because of its well organised open day. I have always wanted to study law but Queen Mary offered me the chance to have a year abroad to expand my knowledge of European Law. This is exactly what I was hoping for the most.
Everyone who comes to study at Queen Mary is very open minded and comes from different backgrounds and countries. All teachers are extremely competent in their field and very good at teaching. They teach their subject because they love it and this enthusiasm is easily noticeable.
London is the best city to live in when you are young and want to have fun. There is such a wide choice of restaurants, bars, clubs and events taking place that it is impossible not to find something to do!
When I arrived in the UK Queen Mary helped me settle in London and enabled me to meet other students. There were lots of social events, such as freshers week and I was able to make friends with a wide range of people. I chose Queen Mary due to the location and because the course is perfect for me. My degree allows me to travel while I work and languages have always been a passion of mine. The teachers are very supportive and small class sizes give a very personal and informal atmosphere. University grants you a lot more independence and lets you grow into your own person.
The advantage of having a campus is that you feel much more a part of university and have a sense of stability. Mile End is a less expensive area of London and it is located not too far from the city centre. There are places close by, such as Shoreditch, which have a very vibrant night life.
Before joining Queen Mary I worked in Italy as a trainee lawyer for a law firm that specialized in domestic litigation. I decided to undertake postgraduate study in dispute resolution (international arbitration) to explore my strengths, interests and aspirations related to this field of practice.
I chose to study in the UK because of its long-standing tradition for excellence in postgraduate education. The School of International Arbitration (SIA) at Queen Mary is at the forefront of recent developments in the area of international and domestic arbitration.
The academic members of the SIA, such as Professor Loukas Mistelis and Dr Stravros Brekoulakis, are experts in their field and have always been approachable and create a supportive learning environment. Their support and feedback throughout the LLM have been invaluable and whilst being a student at SIA I have begun advising a company about institutional arbitration agreements drafting and review. During my studies I have also had the opportunity to study issues related to Italian Arbitration Law and enjoyed the balanced combination of legal theory and practice through small group tutorials and active discussions during seminars.
A highlight of my time at Queen Mary was the opportunity to take part with five other students in the 4th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court, which is an international competition focusing on investment protection law and its dispute resolution mechanisms. The moot aided me to use my studies in a practical sense and supported my professional development and advocacy skills.
London is one of the best cities for being a postgraduate student. It is not just a matter of choosing the most appropriate postgraduate course, but rather the opportunity to experience a truly international city that is able to offer an almost infinite range of opportunities in terms of networking, social and cultural events.
I had already studied an undergraduate degree but decided to I wanted to be a lawyer so applied for the LLB Senior Status at Queen Mary due to the Law school’s prestigious reputation and London location. Arriving from overseas can be daunting however the university did all it could to help support students such as me, especially helping me find accommodation. The staff couldn’t be more helpful and welcoming; academics and lecturers were always available and willing to help me. The standard of teaching is extremely high and exceeded my expectations; it is a very exciting place to be studying.
My transition into university life was fairly easy, especially as I joined the Queen Mary Football Club where I made a really great group of friends. Getting involved in clubs and societies run by the Students’ Union is a great way to meet new people and try new things. There are amazing experiences to be had if you take advantage of all the opportunities that Queen Mary provides.
The major advantage of studying in the UK is that there is a focus on the practical side of study which has helped me apply my knowledge and be prepared for a future career in engineering. Whilst studying at Queen Mary I have had the opportunity to visit some of the leading companies in the UK such as Ford, Nissan, Astrium, APS (Antibody Production Services) and many more. These visits are a great opportunity to get a feel of what an engineering career is like and help you choose which field you would like to work in.
Queen Mary is now part of the Russell Group which includes the best universities in the UK. This means that student’s receive the highest level of teaching and attend an institution that is renowned for academic excellence in research. Being part of the Russell Group also means that my degree will be accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) which will help with future career progression.
As a student in London you have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. The variety of cultures is just one of the many things that London has to offer. There are numerous cultural events in central London and I took part in the Chinese New Year celebrations at Trafalgar Square which involved traditional dances, fireworks and stunning live performances. One of the best things about London is the public museums and galleries, such as the British Museum, Tate Modern and Victoria Albert, which are free to enter.
Queen Mary is situated in East London and is close to the Olympic Park. East London has become a vibrant area with lots of pretty markets like Columbia Road Flower Market, which is held every Sunday on a street with traditional Victorian shops. In Whitechapel there is the most famous area of the East End, Brick Lane, which is the capital of curry due to its high concentration of Indian restaurants!
London is one of the most vibrant cities in the world and there it contains everything that a student is looking for! From free entry to museums and galleries to the most amazing clubs in town! London is a city of history and culture and no matter how well you know it there is always something new to discover.
There are a number of scholarships and funding options available for students wishing to study at Queen Mary at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Find out more about all of our scholarships and the types of funding available using our database.
