Carlos Martínez RuizMSc Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
I especially enjoyed the practicality of my MSc course. There are of course classic lectures, but important training is also given via hands-on activities, from lab work through to field work. Not to mention the final project that gives an opportunity to work on real problems in either pure scientific research or applied environmental management. The training is very intensive, but worth it, as it taught me most of the tools and skills needed for a future career related to ecology and evolutionary biology.
London is a vibrant city with much to offer in every sense. Even though it is the biggest city in Europe, it has a highly welcoming ambience and offers an unmatched cultural agenda. On top of that, as a student in science, it is relatively easy to get close to the highest spheres of cutting edge science, as London hosts many of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world.
The campus in Mile End is great for studying, relaxing and having fun. Drapers pub, QMotion gym, the cafes, and even the canal side are good examples of that. In addition, there is a vibrant schedule of activity carried out by the societies at QMUL. The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences is located in the Fogg Building, which is a relatively new building equipped with all the necessary facilities for both practical teaching and high quality professional research. In my experience, the staff are always busy but they are willing to help, so do not hesitate to go to them whenever you have doubts! The research carried out at QMUL is excellent and in many aspects is world leading, so one safe way to boost your career in research is to contact the research group of your interest and get involved with their research.
I am currently studying a PhD at QMUL, which is funded by the London NERC DTP. The scholarship is very competitive, and undoubtedly the experience I gained during the MSc and the help provided by the staff benefitted me in getting selected for the PhD programme.

Studying in the UK is the ideal platform to start an international career. I only wanted to study in London and Queen Mary had the best location and choice of courses. Although I applied and confirmed my offer without physically visiting the university, once I did I was impressed with the campus and got a very favorable impression of the academics that I talked to. Living in student accommodation helped with meeting people and I go to know students from other departments. I do think it is important to have a positive attitude and be proactive. Talk to everyone!
I am studying a joint degree of economics and politics and subjects really complement each other. The course provides a perfect counterbalance between numbers and letters - one day you find yourself working through statistical problem sets and the next you can be writing an essay on the concept of religion! I am very happy with the standard of teaching from both departments and its great to experience two different styles of teaching.
Again, I would like to stress the importance of being proactive and seeking out lecturers in their office hours for further support - if you fall behind in a course that has 100 students the lecturer is not going to wait for you!
Moving to London to study was a big transition but personally I found it manageable. Although in Spain the teaching and assessment system differs incredibly from the British, I found the university offered all the resources required to help the transition. The workload did noticeably increase (but that was expected) and self-discipline and time management became essential. I took an in-sessional course on academic writing which proved to be helpful for essays; since this is a concept the Spanish education system does not rely on.
Ruben PeraltaLLB English and European Law
As a student in the School of Law at Queen Mary you quickly learn why it is one of the top law schools in the country. The wide variety of modules available and the quality of the lectures and tutorials create an ideal setting for a great learning experience. The law faculty ensures that its' students are prepared to commence work in a law firm or barristers chambers by the time they have completed their degree course.
The year I spent abroad has probably been the most amazing experience of my life. Leaving the comfort of your home university for a European university, being forced to communicate in a foreign language and meeting new people from different countries and cultures on a daily basis, helps develop and strengthen your character. During my year abroad I have benefited greatly both academically and socially. You get the chance to be immersed in a different education system, with different teaching approaches, forcing you to learn how to adapt quickly and to be resourceful; skills that are valued highly in the professional world. Socially, it is a once in a lifetime experience to meet a wide variety of personalities and make new friends - it is a friendly, welcoming and highly multicultural environment which I highly recommend to all future students.
There are a number of scholarships and funding options available for students wishing to study at Queen Mary at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Find out more about all of our scholarships and the types of funding available using our database.
