Information for International students within the UK

Queen Mary has a long history of welcoming students from around the world. Over the years, many thousands of international students have graduated from the college and gone on to pursue successful careers. Today, we are home to students from more than 162 different countries. This diversity contributes to a lively and welcoming community which should make you feel comfortable and at home.

One of the largest colleges of the University of London and one of the few with fully integrated teaching, research and residential facilities, our setting gives you the benefits both of a large campus environment and of the countless academic and social opportunities of London.

Almost 45% of the international students that start degrees at Queen Mary, University of London have previous experience of studying in the UK. Usually this is through A Levels or International Baccalaureate, Foundation programmes, English Language courses or for some postgraduate students, their bachelor's degrees.

Entry requirements

Undergraduate

Our entry criteria for undergraduate programmes vary from degree to degree and range between BBB-A*AA (120–168 UCAS points – 2018 entry) for A Level and 26-38 points for IB. Most degrees have subject pre-requisites which can be found on the departmental pages of the website or in the undergraduate prospectus.

Queen Mary will consider all applications from students studying foundation programmes on an individual basis. We do have individual progression agreements in place with a number of foundation course providers, but no specific criteria that will apply to all institutions that offer international foundation programmes.

If you are studying for a BTEC national diploma or another qualification you are advised to contact the Admissions office before applying to discuss your options.

All foundation students need to support their applications with an English Language qualification. We accept both IELTS and the Trinity College examination.

If you are currently studying at an English Language school in the UK you would need to provide evidence of academic qualifications obtained in your home country. These qualifications must be equivalent to A-Level otherwise you may be asked to study a foundation programme before starting your undergraduate degree.

Prospective undergraduates should apply through UCAS.

Postgraduate

Taught degrees (MSc/MA: one year)

Applicants who have achieved upper second class honours, or equivalent, will be considered for our masters degree courses, as appropriate. Applications for postgraduate courses are made directly to the institution.

Queen Mary also offers a Pre-Masters programme for students with lower grades or who those who require further English language study.

Please note that all applications are considered on an individual basis and students may be admitted to masters programmes with a lower level degree if they have work experience relevant to the degree applied for.

Research degrees (MPhil/PhD: three years)

Applicants for PhD study should preferably hold a masters degree with high marks. You will need to supplement your application with a 500-word research proposal; more information can be found on the postgraduate website and the departmental pages.
The above list is for guidance only and is not conclusive.  Students unsure about the acceptability of their qualifications should write, for advice, to Queen Mary's International Office or Admissions Office, with full details of their educational background.
