Orientation

Welcome to Queen Mary!

For over 30 years, we’ve welcomed students from around the world who have come to study on our short-term programmes. We have a great deal of experience in making you feel at home and ensuring that you make the most of your time studying in London. We aim to provide you with everything you need to make you comfortable and make your time with us a success. We want you to feel that Queen Mary is your London home.

We support you before you arrive, throughout your studies and then as valued alumni. Our dedicated, friendly Global Opportunities team is here to help you with any questions you might have and support you while you study with us.

Before you arrive

We will send you all the essential pre-arrival information and give you step-by-step help and advice on getting ready to join us at Queen Mary in plenty of time before you join us, so you feel confident about living and studying in London.

Arrival Guide – Your handbook to getting to grips with life at Queen Mary

Your Arrival Guide is your essential guide to living and studying at Queen Mary. This will be shared with you close to the time of your arrival.

Once you arrive at Queen Mary

Our Welcome Programme ('Orientation') is designed to make you feel at home as soon as you arrive in the UK. We’ll give you practical advice about living and studying in London and give you the option of attending some of our social events which are great ways to make new friends and have some fun!

Our Welcome programme

  • We organise social events so you can meet your fellow Study Abroad students and start making friends as soon as you arrive

  • Our Orientation programme welcome talk will answer any questions you have about living or studying at Queen Mary

  • Some of our academic schools run their own induction sessions – we will notify you of these during our welcome talk and publish these on QMplus

  • Our Students’ Union, QMSU, organises a jam-packed week of welcome events (and will introduce you to their societies and clubs)

  • You’ll have our continual support while you are with us via our Global Opportunies office and School/ Department contacts as well as through our email via study-abroad@qmul.ac.uk. We also send regular GO newsletters that will tell you about any upcoming events (or deadlines…) on campus and in London.

Welcome Talk

The main part of your orientation programme is our welcome talk which aims to introduce you to living and studying in the UK and Queen Mary. We will run workshops and presentations with lots of useful information: from finalising your modules, getting around London, where to buy food, keep fit, as well as health and safety advice.

Queen Mary also hosts a Welcome Week for all of our students upon your arrival either in September or January, alongside your Associate student-specific Orientation.
