Level of competitiveness

Competitive **

The level of competitiveness (Less competitive * / Competitive ** / Very competitive ***) refers to one's chances of being allocated an exchange space at this partner. This is an approximation determined by the number of applications received for this destination during the last academic year versus the total number of exchange spaces available to Queen Mary students.

Academic Calendar

Courses and restrictions

Courses in Pace’s School of Performing Arts (recently renamed “Sands College of Performing Arts”) and in the Film and Screen Studies Department are not open to Exchange students.

International exchange students register alongside Pace students for classes across all schools, and they can enroll in just about everything – as long as (a) they meet the prerequisites, and (b) there is room in the class when they register.

For general information, visit the Academics page, and for course selection, visit the Schedule Explorer (searchable by campus).

Credits

Students need to register for the undergraduate full courseload at Pace, which is 4 Pace modules per semester, equivalent to 12-16 Pace credits.

Accommodation

Learn more about Pace Housing on campus and the four NYC residence halls. Learn more about optional, on campus meal plans

For more information, visit Housing and Dining.

Important: space is limited and not guaranteed for exchange students. Housing requests are considered on a first come, first served basis, alongside Pace's domestic student population (international exchange students are given no priority over full-degree students). However, the ISS team tries to assist visiting students as much as possible. If international exchange students meet the (earlier) deadline for housing, Pace tries to accommodate them in housing on campus, but no guarantees can be made. It should be noted that many students chose to live off campus.

Private accommodation: Due to the size and popularity of New York City as a global destination, finding secure and affordable private accommodation is competitive and challenging year round, especially at the start of the academic year. Queen Mary students who intend to look for private accommodation are advised to follow the partner’s guidance as soon as possible to begin their accommodation search safely. Guidance about searching for private accommodation safely is also available on the QMplus resource page, “Pre-departure” tab from early spring. Pace provides this useful resource document about smart and safe searching for private accommodation in the New York City metropolitan area:

Cost of living

You can find general, up-to-date information about the cost of living in New York City here.

Living expenses can vary depending on individual lifestyle, especially in New York where renting private accommodation can be as (if not more) expensive than renting privately in London. Please consult the estimated minimum and maximum cost of living figures for this destination country available in our “Estimated Costs of Living” document available on our Finance page.

Important: Students considering to live and study in New York must be realistic about financial matters, this being one of the most expensive cities in the world. In the decision-making process, Queen Mary students must calculate their forecasted budget with confirmed funding to which they will have access against the rising cost of living.
