Mexico is a well-known tourist destination, offering the fabulous beach destinations of Acapulco and Cancun. According to the Lonely Planet, “Mexico is packed with history and culture” including 26 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the remains of the Mayan and Aztec civilisations, and the floating gardens of Xochimilco in Mexico City.

Academic Calendar

  • Semester 1: early August to early December
  • Semester 2: early February to mid-June

Both sets of dates above include mandatory Arrival and Orientation days. Each semester has 12 weeks of classes and the majority of classes have three to four contact hours per week per unit. These are followed by a three week exam period.

Courses

Attend regular courses taught in Spanish and more than 500 courses offered in English in different academic fields such as Engineering, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Business, Economics, Humanities, Social Sciences, Architecture, Arts and Design, Agriculture and Food Technology, Health Sciences and Political Sciences.

Important for Comparative Literature students: very limited availability of literary modules, so not an option for single honours students studying Comparative Literature. Joint honours students studying degree programmes including Comparative Literature need to ensure options exist that fulfil Queen Mary course requirements.

Credits

The number of credits that any course at Tec de Monterrey is worth is determined by the number of class hours and self-study time that a student must spend weekly in the subject. Class size averages 30 students. Queen Mary students studying on exchange at Tec de Monterrey must follow 18 TEC credits per semester (equivalent to 60 Queen Mary credits).

Accommodation

All of Tec de Monterrey's campuses have different accommodation options. Please note that not all options are available at all campuses, and the cost for each varies from city to city. Options may include any of the below - please visit this link to review the availability of different accommodation options for a specific campus, such as for Mexico City (Ciudad de México):

  • Home Stay Programme: Live with a Mexican family and learn about Mexican culture and traditions while experiencing Mexican hospitality
  • Off-Campus accommodation: List of housing options around campus, ranging from rooms to complete houses. Students are responsible for handling arrangements of any off-campus accommodation.
  • On-Campus Residence Halls: Residences managed by Tec de Monterry providing a stuiable environment for national and international students.

Cost of living

Any nominated student participating in an international programme at Tec de Monterrey is required to obtain the CHUBB international insurance recommended by Tec de Monterrey. The insurance must be bought before arriving in Mexico.

 

Visa/immigration process

The immigration process is determined by the nationality of the student.

  • Non-restricted nationalities: Require an FMM (migratory form obtained upon entry to the country), but do not need a visa if the stay is for 180 days or less (semester or summer).
  • Restricted nationalities: Require a visa that must be issued at any Mexican consulate or embassy, regardless of the time of stay. Review the list of restricted nationalities.

Everyone coming to Mexico for more than 180 days (full-year exchanges or longer), is required to have a visa.
