Additional opportunities eligible for funding

Queen Mary University has assessed and chosen the below partner universities' summer schools as affordable, accessible and desirable options when compared across all offerings. In the application form, you can apply for GO Summer! funding (GO Summer! Bursary and if applicable, Turing Scheme funding) to support your participation in the below eligible summer school opportunities. Applicants must follow the application instructions as detailed below on this webpage.

Find out more about the individual countries and destinations, costs, and total potential maximum funding below. Costs quoted do not include travel to/from the host country, so bear this in mind when budgeting (yet funding available from Queen Mary may offset this, so consult the available funding carefully as well).

Students qualifying in priority groups (1) or (2) are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as those applications will be reviewed and processed on a semi-rolling basis, periodically every 3 weeks (approximately) up through the deadline. Available funding will be allocated throughout the application period to these students first whose applications are successful, and funding will be allocated to other students where remaining.

Final application deadline: Wednesday 03 April 2024, 12 noon (local UK time). Late/incomplete applications will not be considered.

Costs

We have included estimated costs for each programme to help your decision making, listed in the local currency. Please note these costs are only estimates and may be subject to change depending on course availability, housing choices etc. We do not guarantee that these costs are inclusive of 100% of the costs you might incur; please ensure you have checked the partner's own summer school website (links are provided under each description) and perform your own cost calculations, also taking into mind additional costs you might have depending on your individual situation. If your nationality would also require you to obtain a visa for your destination country, you would also need to consider this as an additional cost in your budgeting.

Funding

Total maximum potential funding available from Queen Mary for each opportunity is also provided as a guideline, to help you ascertain how affordable each opportunity might be for you, dependent on your circumstances and for which priority group you may qualify. Bear in mind that the timeline of receiving funding may not be aligned with when you may need to make a payment for any costs. Please contact summerschool@qmul.ac.uk with any concerns.

How to apply

  • Ensure you have read the eligibility section on the GO Summer! landing page to ensure you can apply and that you understand the terms and conditions of the available funding streams.
  • Carefully read all of the below instructions and information on this page before submitting any application.
  • You need to carefully review the information relating to your preferred summer school opportunity - part of the personal statement is to tell us what and why you want to study your preferred course at that preferred summer school and what academic and personal benefits you will gain from it.
  • Apply for funding from Queen Mary via the Global Opportunities (GO) team internally with this application form for funding for eligible opportunities - we advise that you prepare your personal statement in advance (see requirements in the "Selection timeline and criteria" section on the GO Summer! page) 
  • Directly after submitting the online application form, you must submit your official transcript of records by email to summerschool@qmul.ac.uk  within 1 day of submitting the online application form or at the very latest by the application deadline - whichever comes first. The transcript should be a PDF of your HEAR. Only if you are only in year 1, please instead upload a screenshot of your provisional results for the current academic year from your MySIS account, as the HEAR is not yet available to you (all other students must upload their HEAR).
  • No application will be reviewed or considered for any funding until an official transcript is received.
  • Optional: If you have already applied to your preferred partner university's summer school (not mandatory at the time of applying for GO Summer! funding from Queen Mary via the GO team), you may also email confirmation of your acceptance letter/email from them to summerschool@qmul.ac.uk. If you decide to apply to the partner in advance of your funding application to the GO team, this is at your discretion. Some students choose to do this where they are concerned that a popular course at one of the below universities may potentially fill up and therefore wish to apply early to secure a space. If you do this, bear in mind that you may be asked to pay non-refundable costs as part of the partner's application process. The decision of whether or not to apply to the partner in advance or to submit such evidence in advance will not affect the outcome of your application now with the GO team; however, it is useful for the GO team to know for next steps, please see below (if your application is successful, you will need to apply to the partner soon afterwards). 
  • When reviewing applications, the GO team will contact you if you must send applicable supporting documentation (relevant for qualifying in a certain priority group). Where requested, this documentation must be sent to summerschool@qmul.ac.uk within 3 business days in order to be considered for that priority group.

Successful funding applications, next steps

If and once you learn that your application is successful, you would receive a conditional funding offer. You then must complete all of the below within 3 business days of receiving the outcome from the GO team in order to remain eligible:

  • Apply to the agreed partner university's summer school (if you haven't already done so)
  • Email the GO team at summerschool@qmul.ac.uk the PDF of your confirmation of acceptance letter/email for the agreed summer school (or at the very least, confirmation of application) from the agreed partner university (if you have not already done so).

By submitting an application and if you are successful, you agree to follow the published procedure to complete the above steps and understand that failure to do so may result in your conditional funding offer being withdrawn.

Unsuccessful applications

You will be informed of the outcome of your GO Summer! funding application according to the selection timeline section on this page. If the Global Opportunities team is unable to provide you with financial support for your preferred summer school, you may decide if you still wish to participate in that summer school without GO Summer! funding. Bear in mind that you would be responsible for any costs you have already incurred relative to any application you may have already completed with the partner university.

South Korea

Seoul National University (SNU)

  • Summer school dates: 24/25 June - 27 July 2024 (4 weeks), more details here
  • Required costs as advertised by SNU: Estimated between $2,060 - $3,140 USD (approximately £1,629 - £2,484 GBP*), not including potential 20% early-bird discount, breakdown:
    • Application fee (non-refundable): $180 USD (approximately £142 GBP*)
    • Tuition: $1080 USD for one 2-credit course, $1,620 USD for one 3-credit course (approximately £854 / £1,281 GBP*). Multiple courses possible and discount available from 5+ credits. Early bird 20% discount off tuition available, conditions apply (see above hyperlink).
    • Housing: $800 - $1080 USD depending on option chosen (approximately £633 - £854 GBP*)

Description: UAL Summer School (1-4 weeks courses) is held in July on UAL campus. Taught in English or Spanish, courses can be awarded for up to 10.7 ECTS (please note however that these credits cannot be applied towards your Queen Mary degree).

Pompeu Fabra University

Full details for Pompeu Fabra University's Barcelona International Summer School (BISS)

Description: Pompeu Fabra University offers the Barcelona International Summer School (BISS) as a flagship program to advance the curriculum of both domestic and international undergraduate students during the summer term. A wide array of on-campus courses is offered. Courses are credit-bearing (ECTS) and can be taken in English, Spanish or Catalan, in and international classroom environment. They are structured in modules of different duration and intensity, which can be flexibly combined in periods ranging from one to four weeks. Read BISS student stories to learn more.

The Barcelona International Summer School (BISS) is far more than just a series of courses. It is an opportunity to learn about exciting topics of your choice and also to engage with the BISS community beyond the classroom, to meet other students from a variety of backgrounds and to explore the city and UPF. The evening social programme offers exciting social and cultural activities to enjoy Barcelona with fellow local and international students. The activities explore issues such as science, wellbeing, sustainability and social impact, and promote the exchange of ideas across disciplines and subject areas. Joining onto these alongside your course(s) will help you to become part of the BISS community. Note: All evening activities are open to BISS students and lecturers and are included in the tuition fee and are free of charge. Each activity has limited spots and will be assigned on a first come first served basis.

The Netherlands

Utrecht University

The Utrecht Summer School offers over 130 2-week courses spread over three different 2-week periods within Utrecht. Costs and potential funding available from Queen Mary changes depending on how long you study for in Utrecht. To be eligible for Turing Scheme funding, you must study two in-person, 2-week consecutive courses by combining two consecutive sessions (dates below) in order to be physically present in Utrecht for a minimum of four consecutive weeks. See below the different impact that potential funding has on the total cost for the different options.

Important: The below details are for the non-tuition free (i.e. fee-paying) spaces. Queen Mary also has tuition-free spaces available at Utrecht; please consult our Tuition-free summer opportunities page to learn more and apply for those (course restrictions apply).

4-WEEK duration (two courses):

  • Summer school dates: Session I + Session II: 08 July - 02 August 2024 (4 weeks) or Session II + Session III: 22 July - 16 August 2024 (4 weeks)
    (You would need to complete 4 consecutive weeks by following either sessions I and II together, or sessions II and III together.)
  • Required costs as advertised by Utrecht: €2,006 EUR - €6,656 in total (approximately £1,735 - £5,756 GBP*) (not including 10% partner discount off tuition), breakdown:
    • Tuition: Varies by course, from €175 EUR and upwards of €2,500 EUR x 2 courses = €350 - €5,000 EUR (approximately £301-£4,324 GBP*). There are many options available at all price points. Queen Mary students can benefit from a 10% partner discount with a promo code that is given to successful applicants at a later stage, when completing the partner's application process.

Description: Broaden your horizon with summer courses in the inspiring international environment of Utrecht. The Utrecht Summer School, founded in 1986 by Utrecht University, is the largest academic summer programme in the Netherlands and is one of the biggest summer schools in Europe welcoming over 3,000 students every summer from around the world. One of its kind and bringing together multiple institutions in the city, the well-established Summer School is a partnership of Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts. These institutions of higher education offer high quality, fully accredited summer courses in English. Utrecht Summer School not only offers you a fine selection of interesting courses in all kinds of disciplines, it also aims at giving the participants an unforgettable experience through a robust social programme, where you can get to know your classmates while enjoying the vibrant local culture of Utrecht and The Netherlands.

Important: Please note that not all courses take place in Utrecht (who have an international portfolio of hybrid and co-delivered global course offerings. You are only eligible to complete the modules that take place in-person in Utrecht.

Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam

The VU Amsterdam Summer School offers a variety of exciting courses, and most of these last two weeks (a few offered last one week). Note: To be eligible for Turing Scheme funding, you must study two in-person (on campus), two-week courses: a first two-week course during Session 1 followed by a second two-week course during Session 2 in order to be physically present in Amsterdam for a minimum of four consecutive weeks. 4-WEEK duration (two courses):

  • Summer school dates: Sessions 1 and 2: 06 July - 04 August 2024 (including arrival and departure days) 
  • Estimated required costs as advertised by VU Amsterdam PRE-HOUSING: €2,690 EUR (approximately £2,326 GBP*) in total, breakdown:
    • Tuition: €995 EUR (partner rate) per two-week course x 2 courses = €1,990 EUR (approximately £1,721 GBP*). Learn about what's included here. VU Amsterdam also offers their own scholarships.
    • Food: minimum €300 EUR if you cook for yourself, eating out will be more expensive
    • Insurance: €50 EUR
    • Public transport or bike rental: €150 EUR
