“An update is downloaded and ready to be installed on your phone.” Have you ever ignored this notification, procrastinated, and later forgot about it? Wonder what will happen when you install the update on your phone?
Whether your phone is iOS, Android or Windows, these updates are necessary to protect you. With every update, your device’s security and performance can improve. A recent report conducted by Forbes Insights on behalf of BMC found that known vulnerabilities are the leading cause of data breaches, accounting for 44% of the breaches.
For example, you may have recently seen in the news that a couple of vulnerabilities were found within Apple and Microsoft software that could provide hackers with full admin access to the affected devices. The vendors immediately released critical security updates in order to patch these devices and protect against the vulnerabilities as there were credible reports that suggested that hackers were abusing the vulnerability to attack users.
So how can we check if our devices are up to date?
Android users can go to Settings > System > Advanced > System update. You should see a message telling you your system is up to date. If you want to double-check, hit the Check for update button.
iOS user can go to Settings > General > Software Update. If a new version of iOS is available, this will appear here, and you can tap on Download and Install to update your phone successfully.
Since iOS 12, Apple has provided an Automatic Updates option on the Software Update screen. If this is enabled, the phone will automatically apply patches overnight, waiting until the device is idle, plugged into power and connected to a Wi-Fi network.
