When using your devices in public places such as the library it is important to consider its physical security. If a criminal gets physical access to your unlocked device, your sensitive data and personal information is at risk. The following security measures can help secure your device from physical threats:
All your devices should have a strong password or passcode. If someone steals you mobile or laptop, a password will prevent them from easily accessing your data. This should be combined with a short screen auto lock period to help protect your device if it is stolen while unlocked. QMUL recommends a 5-minute lockout timer for laptops and a 1-minute lockout timer for mobiles.
If you are using your laptop in a public area, such as in the library or a coffee shop, you should not leave your device unattended. You should also always lock your device when not in use, even if it will remain within your view. When not using a device, it is easy to become distracted, allowing a hacker time to potentially install malicious software on your unlocked device, or access your personal data.
While working in a public place it is also important to be aware of your surroundings – particularly of people who may be watching what you are doing on your device over your shoulder – a technique called shoulder surfing. They may try to view your login credentials as you type them, so be vigilant of who can view your screen in public.
