Stata is a comprehensive statistical software package widely used for data management, statistical analysis, graphics, simulations, regression, and custom programming. It is a popular tool amongst students and academics working in fields such as economics, sociology, political science and biomedicine.
Queen Mary currently hold a site license for Stata/MP2 which is available for both Staff and Students on Managed, Self-managed or personally owned devices. More details on how to request access can be found below.
IT Services provide support with installing Stata software on Queen Mary Managed, Self-managed and personally owned devices. Follow the instructions below for your device.
As of 25 July 2024, ITS is in the process of making Stata/MP2 v18.5 available on the Managed Service and is expected to be completed by 5 August 2024.
To request Stata software on your managed device, please raise a request using our IT Service Desk self-service portal.
Already have access to an existing Stata license (Stata/BE or Stata/SE v18) and wish to upgrade to the Stata/MP2 v18.5 site license?
The newest version will automatically appear in the software centre for you to update. If you require further support, please contact the IT Service Desk.
This applies to both Windows and Mac self-managed / personal devices where Stata MP2 (for version 18 or earlier) is due to expire on 5 August 2024.

If you are using a self-managed / personal device and would like to access Queen Mary's Stata/MP2 v18.5 site license, please follow the instructions for your chosen operating system on the Stata Website.

2. Activation
To activate Stata, please follow this link to Queen Mary's site license credentials.
You will be asked to login with your University username and password.
If you require technical help or support with Stata, please contact the IT Service Desk.
If your current Stata/MP2 v18 license is due to expire or has expired you will need to update the serial number within the Stata application to access Queen Mary's site license.
1. Update
Follow the instructions on how to update the Serial Number details for your chosen operating system via the Stata Website.
When prompted, enter the following:
Name: Full Name
Organisation: QMUL

You will be asked to login with your University Username and Password.
If you would like to upgrade to Queen Mary's site license from Stata/BE or Stata/SE, please follow the instructions below.

Follow the instructions for your chosen operating system for upgrading your edition via the Stata Website.
To activate Stata using the QM Site License, please follow this link to the site license credentials.
To access the Queen Mary site license from a pre-Stata v18 license, this will require a new installation of Stata. Please follow the instructions below.

*You have the option to run two separate versions of Stata however, having a single version is advisable. More information on how to manage this is discussed in the Stata FAQs.

You cannot run different editions of Stata simultaneously i.e. MP2 cannot be run alongside Stata/SE or BE. You have the option to run two separate versions of Stata however, having a single version is advisable. Stata versions are also backwards compatible i.e. Stata/MP2 v18.5 is compatible with v16.

Upgrading to Queen Mary's site license does not inherently carry a risk of data loss. However, please follow guidance below to ensure a smooth upgrade:
Backup your data: Always save and back up your files prior to making any changes. This is a good practice for any software upgrade to prevent loss of data.
Compatibility: Stata maintains backward compatibility.
Follow upgrade instructions: Please ensure official upgrade instructions (detailed above) are followed. These instructions typically cover steps to install the new version and manage any configuration settings that might need to be updated.
Verify Data Integrity: After the upgrade, open and verify a few of your key datasets to ensure they are intact and that your analyses run as expected. This can help identify any potential issues early on.
System Requirements: Ensure your system meets the requirements for Stata/MP2 version 18.5. Upgrading without meeting system requirements might lead to performance issues or other problems that could indirectly affect your data handling.
