Staff Apprenticeships at Queen Mary

Staff Apprenticeships at Queen Mary

An Apprenticeship is a job with training to support your career development and make sure that you can develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for the role.

Apprenticeships logoYou will be an employed member of staff and will work towards a recognised qualification as part of your role. The completion of your apprenticeship training will be a condition of your contract of employment.

As a member of Queen Mary staff, you will be entitled to all the same staff benefits as other members of staff.

We have several staff apprentices at Queen Mary who are either recruited into their apprenticeship roles, or current staff who have chosen to complete an apprenticeship as a career development qualification.

We recruit all year round. To search for current staff Apprenticeship vacancies, please visit the vacancies page and search for apprentice.

Frequently asked questions

What do you mean by ‘staff apprentice’?

A Staff Apprentice is a member of staff who works for Queen Mary University London. If you are already working for another employer and are interested in apprenticeship training with Queen Mary, then please see our Degree Apprenticeship programmes.

How much will I be paid?

Queen Mary is a London Living Wage employer. The specific salary for the apprenticeship role will be advertised in the job advert.

How much time will I spend training?

As a Queen Mary Apprentice, you will spend 20% of your employed time completing learning activities and working towards your apprenticeship qualification. This is called ‘Off-the-job Training.’ You will complete an approved training programme delivered by our selected training partners and be supported by a workplace mentor.

Who pays for the training?

Queen Mary is an apprenticeship levy payer. This means that we can fund apprentice training fees at no cost to the apprentice. However, for us to access this funding, you will need to meet the eligibility criteria.

What are the eligibility criteria?

The Government funding rules for apprenticeships specify who is eligible. Usually, you will be:

    1. UK nationals and have lived in the UK or the EEA for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship
    2. Irish nationals and have lived in the UK, Ireland or the EEA for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship
    3. EEA nationals and have obtained pre-settled or settled status under the EU settlement scheme and have lived in the EEA, Gibraltar or the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship
    4. Non- UK, Irish, EEA nationals who have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) and have lived in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship.

However, there are some exclusions and exceptions to these criteria which are documented in Annex A of the ESFA employer Apprenticeship funding rules. If you require specific advice about your eligibility, please contact us on apprenticeships@qmul.ac.uk

Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor visa applications for Apprenticeship positions as they do not meet the minimum qualifying criteria for sponsorship requirements.

You will need to provide evidence to demonstrate your eligibility.

Are there age criteria for apprenticeships?

You must be over the age of 16 to start an apprenticeship, there is no upper age limit.

We will accept applications from you if you are 15 years old at the time of applying, as long as you turn 16 years of age before the apprenticeship employment commences.

Are there any educational entry requirements?

This will depend on the apprenticeship you are applying for and will be listed on the advert and/or Job Profile. Please make sure you take time to read these carefully.

Some apprenticeships will require you to already have maths and English GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, however some will not and you will be required to achieve a Functional Skill at Level 2 whilst on the programme if you do not already have these prior qualifications.

Apprenticeships are designed to develop new knowledge and skills at a higher level than you already have, or in a new vocational area. So, you will not normally be eligible if you already hold the same or similar qualification in the same vocational area.

For example: If you already hold a Degree (Level 6) in Business Management then it is unlikely that you will be eligible for a Level 3 apprenticeship role in Business Administration. You would be eligible to apply for a different vocational area.

If you are not sure, please contact us.

When can I apply for a staff apprenticeship?

We currently recruit staff apprentices throughout the year. It is worth creating a job alert to be notified when new apprenticeship roles are advertised. See the ‘How to apply’ information below.

What are you looking for in an apprentice?

An apprenticeship is a combination of both work and training. Apprentices need to be committed, willing to learn, well-organised, enthusiastic and able to manage their time effectively.

    What is the selection process?

This may depend on the apprenticeship you are applying for. However, all staff apprenticeship vacancies will require you to complete an online application form. If you are successful, you will then be invited to come and meet us for an interview and maybe an assessment. Full details of the format and what to expect will be provided in advance. You will also need to meet the eligibility criteria for apprenticeships.

We have created a helpful Staff Apprenticeship Applicant Guide and would encourage you to refer to it throughout your application.
