Law for the Arts

Law for the arts poster

The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre offers free legal advice for people involved in the creative industries who have a legal issue relating to their work. This includes issues around intellectual property such as trademark and copyright. If you are a budding web-designer, musician, artist, writer, sculptor, designer or actor who cannot afford to access the legal advice you need then we may be able to help. The QMLAC was the first university in London to dedicate a clinic specifically for those working in the creative industries.

Case Study

Jessica asked the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre to provide her advice on setting up her own business called ‘The Art List.’ Her aim is to set up a website primarily targeted at couples who are about to marry and will allow wedding guests to purchase art work as gifts through an online service. To set up the business Jessica needed to produce a contract for prospective artists who wished to display their art on the website, a contract for customers and a contract with her business partner.

Jessica received an advice letter, which outlined all the clauses required for each contract. This provided Jessica a firm understanding of how contract law applied in her circumstances.

The legal service at Queen Mary provided us with a sound base from which to develop our various company contracts. The service was professional, detailed and very useful to us.
