Fellowships

Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have given an outstanding contribution to the Centre.

2024

Fellowships were given to:

  • Professor Alan Dignam, a Professor of Law at Queen Mary University of London. He is one of the UK’s leading corporate law academics and was part of the original academic team that set up the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (QMLAC) to provide pro-bono advice to the local community. He continues to remain actively involved with QMLAC and sits on our management committee.
  • Alexandra Whiston-Dew, a partner at Mishcon de Reya, was instrumental in establishing, and then managing, Mishcon de Reya’s engagement in the SPITE project, a pro bono partnership with QMLAC which advises victims of revenge porn. Alexandra is a member of QMLAC’s External Advisory Board.
  • Harry Eccles-Williams, a partner and litigator at Mishcon de Reya who co-leads the firm's relationship with Queen Mary on the SPITE project. Harry also leads on the project that Mishcon and QMLAC have been working on, which considered how the Online Safety Bill can be drafted so as to best protect such victims, and which led to joint submissions being made to the Public Bill Committee on that Bill.

2023

Fellowships were given to:

  • HHJ Freeland KC, a Circuit Judge at the Central London County Court who has for many years worked with QMLAC students to provide court based teaching initiatives and led training on the law on civil actions against police officers.
  • HHJ Baucher, a circuit judge at the Central London County Court who for many years has worked to forward the teaching initiatives of the QMLAC.  Supporting court based teaching, including the Plea in Mitigation Competition.
  • Mark Pring, a Partner at Reed Smith Solicitors who oversees and steers Reed Smiths 18 year involvement in the QMLAC.

2022

Fellowships were given to;

  • Maria Patsalos, a partner at Mishcon de Reya, who as well as providing immigration supervision for student legal advisors also co-founded the Black Justice Project in partnership with QMLAC, to help tackle/combat the long-term discrimination against the Black community.
  • Simon Lim, a partner at Bross Bennett, for his commitment to pro-bono work with the University, particularly his long-time student supervisor role in the area of family law.
  • Nerys Evans, former Manager for the Department of Law who championed the work of the Centre for over 16 years. 

2019

Fellowships were given to;

  • Philip Ogden, former Queen Mary Professor of Geography, who was instrumental in establishing the QMLAC
  • William Wilson, former head of the QM School of Law, who played a crucial role in in setting up and supporting the QMLAC in it’s early years.
  • Vitoria Nabas, who has for over 15 years and counting, provided supervision and support to student legal advisors in the area of immigration.
