The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre hosted the first ever Southern England School Tasking Regional Final. This brought together four teams, from 4 primary schools in Southern England, to compete for a spot at the Champions of Champions School Tasking Final in Warwick later this year.
This academic year the QMLAC rolled out the School Tasking project at four local primary schools within Tower Hamlets. We are one of 30 Universities across the country getting involved with this initiative, headed up by the University of Warwick.
School Tasking is an outreach project and StreetLaw initiatve that enables young people to learn about the law in a fun and interactive way in the style of the hit TV show Taskmaster.
Out of dozens of teams of primary school students, four were selected to attend the regional final at Queen Mary on 17 April 2024. The teams had to complete a number of tasks throughout the day, and points were awarded by a team of our undergraduate Taskmaster judges.
A particular favourite task saw the teams having to make stop-motion animation films using Lego, to bring the story of R v Roberts and Stevens to life!
A huge congratulations to Christ Church Primary School, one of the Queen Mary schools from the project, who won on the day and are on their way to the Champions of Champions final!
The success of the day would not have been possible without the collaboration of so many. Thank you to Dr Ali Struthers for hosting the final, to Amanda Thurston (University of Hertfordshire) and Johanna Thompson (University of Kent) for leading the project in their university areas, to undergraduate law students from each contributing university for helping judge and assist on the day, and to each school (De Havilland Primary School, New Road Primary School, Christ Church Primary School and Lawdale Junior School) and their staff for coming along and supporting the project from week one.
A special thank you to Eve Haynes (Public Legal Education and Street Law Coordinator at Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre) for planning the event.
