The School of Law is delighted to continue hosting our Alumni Seminar Series, which will be taking place both online or in-person this year.
This month's seminar will be delivered by Dr Ioanna Hadjiyianni on 'The Extraterritorial Reach of EU Climate Law', and this will be taking place online.
This talk will explore the extraterritorial reach of EU climate law. While extending the geographical scope of EU law to regulate greenhouse gas emissions beyond the EU’s territorial borders may offer a promising regulatory approach in incentivising and ramping up efforts to address climate change, it also raises a wide range of legality and legitimacy concerns from the perspective of third countries, particularly considering its impacts on developing countries.
Ioanna Hadjiyianni is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Law, University of Cyprus. Before joining UCY, she was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute. She received her PhD from the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London in 2017. Her thesis investigated the extraterritorial reach of EU environmental law and has been published as a monograph with Hart Publishing in 2019. The monograph was shortlisted for the ‘2020 SLS Peter Birks Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship’. She has taught EU Law and Environmental Law at King’s College London as a visiting lecturer. Prior to joining King’s, she was a Schuman trainee at the Committee on Petitions at the European Parliament in Brussels. Ioanna holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Environmental Law and Policy from University College London (2012) and an LLB in English and European Law from Queen Mary University of London (2011). Her research focuses on the extraterritorial reach of EU environmental law, including climate change, access to justice in environmental matters, the use of EU funding to achieve objectives of the European Green Deal, ship recycling, and the interaction between EU and international law. She is an editor for the Review Articles Section at the Journal of Environmental Law.
