The International State Crime Initiative and the School of Law is delighted to host the book launch of 'Building Catalonia: Self-Determination and Emancipation' at Queen Mary University of London.
In their exciting new book, David Whyte and Ignasi Bernat have brought together the leading voices of the Catalonian left independence movement alongside key figures in the international solidarity movement. This vibrant, thoughtful, incredibly timely intervention articulates the political strategies and aspirations of the anti-capitalist, feminist and socialist struggles for self-determination in Catalonia in a series of 35 short and sharply written essays.
The event brings together Liz Castro, Chair of the International Committee of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Olivier Peter, a Geneva-based lawyer representing Jordi Cuixart and Anna Gabriel (the former in prison, the latter in exile). Also joining the panel will be Professor Bill Bowring, a human rights scholar and practitioner, who recently observed the trials of Catalan political prisoners.
Professor David Whyte is Professor of Socio-legal Studies at the University of Liverpool and the editor of Building a New Catalonia.
Ignasi Bernat is a sociologist and activist based in Barcelona. He has been lecturer at University of Girona and University of Surrey and the editor of Building a New Catalonia.
Liz Castro is an author and translator. She was the former Chair of the International Committee of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) a writer and publisher of books about Catalonia in English, most notably "Many Grains of Sand: A sourcebook of ideas for changing the world, tried and tested in Catalonia" and "What's up with Catalonia? The causes which impel them to the separation".
Professor Bill Bowring, FAcSS, BA, Barrister, is Professor of Law in the School of Law, Birkbeck, University of London, and joined the Law School in 2006. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He is a practising barrister at Field Court Chambers, Gray's Inn. He was also a trial observer for the Catalonia trials.
Olivier Peter is a lawyer specialized in human right’s law and defence of activists. Co-president of the Geneva association of Progressive Jurists, he's currently defending the Catalans leaders Anna Gabriel, refugee in Switzerland, and Jordi Cuixart, political prisoner in Spain.
