The CCLS Open Lecture Series: Ethics in Business and Finance presents Andrew Whittaker, Group General Counsel Lloyds Banking Group, '"Ethical Intelligence' for Lawyers".
Andrew Whittaker was appointed by Lloyds Banking Group as its Group General Counsel on 14 December 2012, effective from 1 May 2013. Working with Deputy Group General Counsel Kate Cheetham, he is responsible for the strategic leadership and direction of the legal team across Lloyds Banking Group which comprises c.370 people in the UK and internationally.
Andrew was General Counsel to the Board of the Financial Services Authority from 1 April 2000 until 31 January 2013. In this role, he was responsible for legal advice to its Board and senior management on all legal issues outside enforcement, and for leadership of the FSA's legal function. He was also member of the FSA's executive committee, and its executive policy and supervisory committees, and was most recently responsible for its input into the Financial Services Act 2012. He was also at different times director responsible for better regulation and acting consumer director. Throughout his time as General Counsel, he chaired the FSA's Lawyers Consultative Group, of which he remains a member.
Before that, Andrew was Deputy General Counsel to the FSA, and had held a series of roles with the Securities and Investments Board, one of its predecessor bodies, including head of international and markets policy and head of securities markets supervision. Andrew has spoken regularly on financial services regulation and also written various books and articles on it.
Andrew has been a non-executive board member of the Legal Services Board, the oversight regulator for lawyers, since 2008.
He read law at Balliol College, Oxford.
