PhD students will be given priority, but LLM students are also welcome. Places are limited.
About the Workshop:
This article focuses on the role of the Israeli politico-legal system in framing and constructing racialized children and childhood. Drawing on the accounts of colonial violence performed over children’s incarcerated bodies and lives, and based on Sherene Razack’s critical analyses on the “pervasiveness of indifference,” we argue that the criminal justice system is fundamental to the state’s targeting of native childhood and children. Through analyses of political statements by politicians, media coverage, legal transcripts, and individual interviews with arrested children, we offer an alternative reading of child arrest in Occupied East Jerusalem. We argue that the Israeli legal system is there to govern the colonized child, and that child arrest is a political text that can assist us in unveiling colonial dispossession. We conclude by claiming that the legal system with its mode of operation lies at the core of the racist settlement project.
