School of Law and Antewep logosThe School of Law is delighted to invite you to the Inaugural Lecture: Human Rights: Navigating between the Global and the Local with Professor Koen De Feyter.

Abstract

Human rights are intended to be universally valid. They are a part of legal globalisation.

The effectiveness of human rights, however, is determined by local circumstances that vary widely across the globe. Using examples from socio-legal fieldwork, the lecture discusses whether global human rights can offer effective protection at the local level, particularly in the Global South.

About the Speaker

Koen De Feyter is Professor of Public International Law at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). He is the Spokesperson of the Research Group on Law and Development and the Coordinator of the Master of Laws (LLM in English) at the same University. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Law and Development Research Network.

He publishes and lectures on the local relevance of human rights in the Global South, on freedom of artistic expression, on law and development and international sustainable development law. He is currently a co-editor of the forthcoming Law and Development Encyclopedia; engaged in a long-term research project involving fieldwork on indigenous rights in Bolivia, and tracking the effort to draft a legally binding instrument on the right to development. He previously worked at the Law Faculty and Centre for Human Rights at the University of Maastricht and at the European Inter-University Centre on Human Rights and Democratization, Venice. He has undertaken human rights and development research in the context of inter-university cooperation and on behalf of a number of intergovernmental organizations, NGOs and social movements, primarily Sub-Saharan African and Asian countries.
