Guest Speaker: Mark Christie, Commissioner, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Washington DC

Mark Christie will speak on contemporary challenges affecting the electrical power grid that are common to the US, UK and EU. Such issues as maintaining reliability, controlling consumer costs, and decarbonization will be discussed.

The presentation will include a generous amount of time for Q&A with the audience.

Biography

Mark Christie is a Commissioner on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which is the federal regulator of the electrical power system in the United States. FERC also is the permitting agency for interstate natural gas pipelines in the US.

At the time he joined FERC, Christie was the Chairman of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, on which he served for nearly 17 years. The Virginia commission regulates public utilities, insurance and banking in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Christie has lectured at Queen Mary for the past several years on American energy law. He taught regulatory law and policy at the University of Virginia Law School for a decade. His international teaching experience includes teaching U.S. constitutional law at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing and at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
