Is there a need for independent oversight of UK Borders and Immigration? A conversation between Nick Rollason, Head of the Immigration Team at Kingsley Napley and David Bolt, the (outgoing) UK Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration.
Chair: Professor Elspeth Guild
The post of Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration was established under the UK Borders Act 2007. The mandate of the Chief Inspector was widely drafted to enable the incumbent to examine any part of the borders and immigration system in accordance with his or her appreciation of the need for oversight. However, the work of the Inspectors has frequently resulted in friction with the Government of the day regarding recommendations for improvements to the system. Delays in publication of the Inspector’s reports have also resulted in weakening the system of oversight. In this session the Head of the Immigration Team at Kingsley Napley will enter into a conversation with the (outgoing) Chief Inspector to examine the role of the Chief Inspector and how to improve oversight in light of the new powers to be granted to the Home Office under the Nationality and Borders Bill 2021.
