Gender identity has been at the forefront of many debates that have emerged in the media over the last decade. From access to single-sexed spaces to admission into sports, the law continues to be presented with challenges in how to account for the lives and experiences of trans individuals.
This talk will give a brief history of the existence of trans identity in the courtroom while exploring the current laws in the United Kingdom that relate to and impact the lives of trans individuals. Three key areas will be focused on: the legal framework surrounding gender recognition, legal anomalies that exist for those who live outside the gender binary, and recent developments that have taken place.
The aim of the seminar is to familiarise staff and students with the relationship between trans identity and the law and equip attendees with the tools needed to engage in wider debates. There will be a Q&A section to allow questions to be asked in a safe, respectful, and non-judgmental space to encourage conversations about what the future of trans identity and the law may look like.
