In this seminar, Professor Reed presented his first findings from his sabbatical research project. The project investigates how far it is feasible for law and regulation to demand from AI developers and users that their AI makes decisions which are fair, reasonable, etc.
He explained the project and how he is investigating it, and also some machine learning basics. He then examined how AI developers understand fairness, and compares it with the understanding from social scientists and philosophers. The seminar concluded with some early thoughts about what this might mean for devising AI regulation.
