Entrants are set a subject for a 2,000 word essay. The judges look for a sound grasp of the law, strong awareness of current affairs and originality of thought.

The first prize of a two-week vacation placement at Field Fisher Waterhouse and £1000 went to Lucy Brewer. Second prize of a two-week vacation placement and £500 went to Claudia Petrat and an honourable mention and special prize of £250 went to Meera Kotedia for a very good third place.

This year’s subject was "Given that individuals have the legal right to die, should they also have the legal right to be killed?". The essay was judged by Bruce Macmillan, general counsel at the Legal Services Board (the senior regulatory body of the legal professions) and Jon Fife, former senior partner at Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP. David Gollancz of Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP, who leads the firm's Corporate Social Responsibility programme and set the essay subject, said:

"It is a serious challenge to law students to prepare these essays in two weeks, at a busy time of the academic year. We were particularly impressed by the winning entries' combination of accurate legal analysis and clear ethical reasoning and it was gratifying to have three entries so strong that we felt impelled to give a special honourable mention prize as well as the first and second prizes."

The competition winners were announced at the George Hinde Moot Competition Final on 25 March 2010.
