The grand final of Queen Mary's undergraduate internal mooting competition, The George Hinde Moot, was held on Thursday 25 March 2010 in the Octagon.
The George Hinde moot final was judged by Court of Appeal Judge, Lord Justice Pitchford. The case title was "Criminal Law Moot on causes of death and dangerous driving". The event was sponsored by Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP.
The final was won by second year student, Karl Laird and the First Year Mooting Cup was jointly awarded to Melanie Shone and Gianni Sonvico. Lord Justice Pitchford described Susan Eljack as a student of great potential.
Margaret Cunningham was the academic co-ordinating the 2009-10 George Hind Moot Competition, she said:
"This year, we had over 100 students competing in our internal competition. All of our students performed exceptionally well; the judges throughout the competition, including both academics and senior practitioners, were all impressed with the quality of the students. This was especially gratifying given the high numbers of first-year students who participated."
Lawrence Wiseman, Internal Moot Master reflected on the George Hinde Moot Competition:
"The moot final was a showcase of outstanding student mooting and a demonstration of the fantastic community at Queen Mary, with over 120 students and faculty there to support four students who each deserved the title of champion.
I have enjoyed working with the enormously talented students who competed this year, and have been privileged to have had outstanding support from the entire faculty at Queen Mary; I know that our mooting programme will continue to move from strength to strength.
The year can be best summed up by the comments of a senior Queens Counsel on one of our semifinal rounds: "Had any one of those students been arguing in the High Court, they would not only have been successful, they would have been a credit to the profession."
