Dr Anneliese Quast Mertsch, a former PhD student at Queen Mary University of London, was mentioned by the International Law Commission's Special Rapporteur, Professor Juan Manuel Gomez-Robledo, on the provisional application of treaties. Professor Gomez-Robledo referred to Dr Quast Mertsch's thesis, which was later published as a book, entitled 'Provisionally Applied Treaties: Their Binding Force and Legal Nature' (Brill | Nijhoff, 2012).
"The Special Rapporteur wishes to highlight the academic research carried out by Anneliese Quast Mertsch on the binding nature of the obligations arising from the provisional application of treaties, which is very valuable for understanding the characteristics and scope of the legal effects of the provisional application of treaties" - Professor Gomez-Robledo
During her time studying towards her PhD at Queen Mary, Dr Quast Mertsch was supervised by Professor Malgosia Fitzmaurice. She now serves as Special Assistant to the Executive Head of the UNCC Secretariat.
