Laura James and Niall Rand, students from the LLB Senior Status programme at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), won the inaugural Dentons Canadian HR Negotiation Competition, beating teams from City University; University of Exeter; University of Kent; University of York; University of Southampton; and University of Sussex. The competition was held at Dentons' London office at Fleet Place.
The competition concerned negotiations between teams on aspects of Canadian Human Rights law. Teams were able to prepare in advance their approaches to the first round of negotiations, which concerned a hypothetical member of the LGBTQ community who had been mistreated in a private prison.
The two highest scoring teams were then selected to go through to the final; an unseen situation involving the City of Vancouver and the IOC. The two finalists had 20 minutes to prepare; before their 45 minute negotiation and 5 minutes of reflection. The final was particularly close and the judges, including Dentons trainees, had a very difficult task in determining that Queen Mary had overcome the excellent team from Sussex.
Our congratulations to Laura James and Niall Rand for their excellent performances and our thanks to the organisers and Dentons for hosting the event.
