Penny Green, Professor of Law and Globalisation and Director of the International State Crime Initiative (ISCI), speaks to TRT World on Myanmar violence and thereason for tension in the region: “I think the tensions you are talking about, are less tensions but artificially cultivated divisions between theIslamic community and Buddhist community, particularly in Rakhine state. Burma/ Myanmar is a very xenophobic country and Muslims throughoutthe country have experienced a high degree of institutionalised discrimination over a period of years. At the moment I think it’s very important to remember that in Rakhine state, prior to the violence of 2012, where we began to see this escalation in persecution of theRohingya and real ratcheting up of the genocide. Prior to that time Buddhists and Muslims lived side by side in the capital of Rakhine state.”
