On 27 June the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), Queen Mary University of London in collaboration with East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL), and in association with the Institute for Global Law Economics and Finance (IGLEF) held the Symposium on the ‘Internationalization of the RMB: Risks and Challenges Ahead’. The event was organized by Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal was attended by academics, diplomats, legal professionals and students.
The Symposium started with the welcome remarks from the Counsellor, Policy Section Director of the Chinese Embassy in London Mr Guo Chentao, and with the Key Note Speech from the Hon. Mr Justice Blair. The first session chaired by Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal (Queen Mary University of London) commented on the Western perspective of the internationalization of the RMB. Professor Larry Catá-Backer (Pennsylvania State University) spoke about the ‘One Belt One Road initiative to develop the RMB and Dr. Paola Subacchi (Chatham House) presented the prospect and challenges for the Renminbi. Charles Proctor (Fladgate LLP) provided an analysis of legal developments.
The second session chaired by Dr Andrea Miglionico (University of Reading) discussed the Chinese perspective of the internationalization of the RMB. Mr Li Zhiqiang and Mr Qu Long (Jin Mao Partners) commented the Chinese lawyer’s practice. Dr. Na Li (ECUPL) spoke about the internationalization of the RMB and China’s seigniorage. Finally, Professor Huachun Guo (ECUPL) presented the methodologies and network of the RMB.
The third session chaired by Dr Michael Waibel (University of Cambridge) discussed about the policy reinforcement: reshaping banking and the capital markets. Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal and Dr Andrea Miglionico presented the development of bond markets in China. Dr. Marco Bodellini (University of Bologna) examined the role of the authorities in bank resolution and Professor Dalvinder Singh (University of Warwick) discussed the cross-border issues in home and host supervision and resolution. Professor Gi Jin Yang (Chonbuk National University) presented the status and implications of Korean shadow banking regulations. Concluding remarks were given by Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal.
