In a letter to the Guardian, Roger Cullis, Visiting Professor in Intellectual Property Law and Technology at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), writes about the value of international students and their contribution to society: “While they were here, the students, many of whom were sponsored by their governments or employers, made a huge contribution to the UK economy. The only hiatus was when the government abolished the post-study work (PSW) visas, causing a drop in applicants. Those overseas students who stayed were mainly appointed to valuable positions involving liaison with their country of origin or other positions requiring their enhanced postgraduate qualification. One was even directly appointed as IP manager of the National Physical Laboratory, responsible for the inventive output of 600 of the UK’s leading physicists.”
