The School of Law at Queen Mary University of London's recent summer Graduation Ceremony saw a father-son pair walk across the stage to receive their degrees together. Sheldon Leung, who recently completed his LLB at QMUL School of Law with First Class Honours, contacted QMUL’s registry office to see if he could arrange for his father, Jeffery, to formally receive the degree he completed some 34 years ago.
Jeffrey qualified in 1986 as a BSc with Honours in Civil Engineering but at the time was unable to attend his graduation. One of the readers in this year’s law graduation, Rupert Seal, helped make Sheldon and Jeffrey’s dream a reality.
On the day of the graduation, Sheldon was 'removed' from the general list, and all the graduands were called to receive their degrees. At this point, the graduation should have concluded, but before doing so, Rupert read the following:
"Principal, we would be grateful for your assistance in addressing circumstances which arose many years ago. In 1986 Jeffrey Leung qualified for the Degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in Civil Engineering - but was unable to attend his graduation. As one of our valued alumni, this matter needs to be concluded satisfactorily.
With your permission, I call for the degree of Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours, Sheldon Leung; and for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in Civil Engineering, his father, Jeffrey Leung.”
Father and son crossed the stage together to riotous applause and cheering from students and their families.
The School of Law at Queen Mary is proud to have facilitated the conferring of Jeffrey’s degree, and congratulates both father and son on receiving their degrees. We wish them all the best for the future!
