Belgium signed an extradition treaty with China last year, but due to protests in Hong Kong, more and more countries are suspending such treaties. Experts call on the Belgian government to be careful with their existing treaty with China. Senior Lecturer in Global Law, Dr Matthieu Burnay, said: “There is not enough debate in parliament about this treaty, that worries me. Moreover, these kinds of extradition treaties can best be dealt with at the European Union level, because Belgium is too small a country to defend itself against China. This may be a task for European Commissioner Didier Reynders, who is responsible for the rule of law.”
