Is it time for a codified constitution?

Published:

Appearing on The World Tonight on BBC Radio 4 Professor Sionadh Douglas-Scott was asked whether Britain should have a codified constitution. She said: “Yes I think it is time to consider it. Recent events have demonstrated that, there are three main reasons. Firstly we need to clarify the status of parliamentary sovereignty which has come under threat recently from a government using the Royal prerogative, most extremely through prorogation, but also attempting to trigger article 50 without parliamentary consent. Secondly, we need to protect human rights which at present can't be entrenched. Thirdly, we need a way of protecting devolved Nations’ rights, we need to have the sort of clarity that a codified constitution could bring.”
