A loot box used in video gaming

Leon Xiao, Teaching Fellow at Queen Mary University of London, has been named as a GamesIndustry.biz “Game Changer” for his research on Loot Boxes.

The paper relates to loot boxes, a randomised monetisation method in video games that is akin to gambling, but which vulnerable consumers, including children, have ready access to.

The paper is the world’s first empirical study of the effectiveness of loot box regulation. The focus is on the consumer protection measure of providing probability disclosures to assist consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions.

‘Gaming the system: suboptimal compliance with loot box probability disclosure regulations in China’ is available on Cambridge Core.
