Over the past few years, a growing number of jurisdictions have restricted access to or criminalised abortion, including the United States, Poland and Nicaragua. In contrast, Ireland legalised abortion in 2018, and there has been a "Green Wave" in Latin America, with Mexico, Argentina and Colombia either decriminalising or fully legalising the procedure. Dr Ruth Fletcher, Reader in Medical Law and Leverhulme Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London, called the situation 'uneven' but remains hopeful: "it is really amazing to see the huge collectives of people on the streets, in Parliament, providing care, all these different levels of activity working together to make care available, to change laws [and] to improve public health."
