The Project will build on the technical and operational frameworks that are currently used by immigration and police enforcement units, including Retrospective Facial Recognition (RFR).
A paper on the use of Retrospective Facial Recognition technology by Dr Daragh Murray was referenced in the article, specifically his concerns on what it means for citizens. Dr Murray warns that RFR “may fundamentally alter the balance of power between the state and its citizens,” and it “will give rise to a serious interference with a number of human rights and is likely to be the subject of legal challenge.” The paper was originally published in the Modern Law Review at the end of 2023.
Dr Murray is Senior Lecturer and Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences Fellow at Queen Mary University of London.
