Professor Elizabeth Gillow, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

Profile

Elizabeth joined Queen Mary University in November 2017 as the Legal Practice Lecturer with responsibility for researching and planning adjustments to the curriculum in view of the  Solicitors Qualifying Examination (which replaced the Legal Practice Course). She was initally the Module Convenor for Law in Context, a compulsory first year module, which aims to give students a good grounding in how to study law as well as giving them guidance and practical experience on how to get a job - including the writing of a CV and how to conduct themselves at interview. 

Elizabeth is also the convenor of a new module - Employment Law: Tribunal Practice and Procedure, which includes an element of practical street law. This module focuses on modern working practices in the UK including the "gig economy" and zero hours contracts and aims to teach students how to equip litigants in person for the most common tribunal claims. She draws on her extensive experience as an advocate in the Employment Tribunal. Elizabeth is also a tutor for the Elements of Contract Law modules and a supervisor to a number of LLM students for their dissertations on corporate and commercial law. 

Elizabeth is the Dean for Education in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is responsible in this capacity for overseeing all aspects of Education in the Faculty particularly in relation graduate outcomes and the National Student Survey.  

Prior to joining Queen Mary, Elizabeth taught for many years at a university in the Midlands where she was Award Leader for the LLM. with Legal Practice as well as leading the Employment Law elective on the Legal Practice Course and the Discrimination in Employment Law elective for the LLB. 

Before entering into academia, Elizabeth was a solicitor at Wragge & Co (1994-1998) and Eversheds (1998-2006) specialising in employment law, with a particular interest in family-friendly rights. She frequently represented her clients in the Employment Tribunal during her time at Wragge & Co. 

Elizabeth is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 

Undergraduate Teaching

Elizabeth is module leader for Law in Context, the aim of which is to give first year students a good grounding in how to study law (including a practical client interviewing exercise and some simulated advocacy) as well as how to get a job (including the writing of a CV, how to draft a job application letter and how to present themselves at interview). She also teaches on the Elements of Contract Law module. Elizabeth has devised a new module - Employment Law: Tribunal Practice and Procedure - which will include an element of practical street law and will aim to teach students how to equip litigants in person for the most common tribunal claims.

Postgraduate Teaching

Elizabeth has supervised a number of LLM dissertations on Corporate and Commercial Law.

Research

Article (with a tax colleague) on the “Gig Economy” to include the status of workers on zero-hour contracts and their tax treatment.

Publications

Elizabeth currently updates the chapters in Tolley’s Employment Law Service on Sunday Trading and Termination of Employment.
