David Southern KC is a practising barrister at Temple Tax Chambers, 3 Temple Gardens, dealing with all areas of tax litigation and advice.

He has a wide-ranging advocacy practice, including the Court of Justice of the European Union, House of Lords, Court of Appeal, High Court and First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber) and Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery Chamber).

Before going into independent practice, he worked in the Inland Revenue and as a legal adviser in Lloyds TSB Bank.

He is author of Tottel's Taxation of Loan Relationships and Derivative Contracts (9th edition due, 2011). He is a contributor to Gore-Browne on Companies and the Law Society Company Law Handbook.

Since 1998 he has been Professorial Fellow and Director of the Institute of Tax Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, responsible for LLM tax courses and PhD students.

He is a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn and former Treasurer of the Bar Council.
