Module Description

This module examines the laws and policies of the European Union regarding healthcare primarily from a rights-based perspective. The module will start by looking at the powers, strategies, instruments and techniques used by the EU to develop its policies in this area. It will then consider the relationship between the EU internal market and healthcare from the perspective of individual rights of patients and health professionals as well as the relationship between healthcare and fundamental rights in the European Union.   

Syllabus
Week 1: role and competence of the European Union in relation to health policies - old and 'new' governance in EU Health law - sources of EU health law
Week2: Free movement of patients in the European Union
Week 3: free movement of health professionals in the European Union
Week 4: Fundamental rights and EU health policies (right to health, non-discrimination, right to privacy and data protection)
Week 5: Beyond rights: EU policies on health promotion
