Year of graduation: 2021Name of programme: Commercial and Corporate Law LLM, 2020Country: Argentina
I am a qualified lawyer in Argentina. When I decided to pursue a LLM, I was convinced that I wanted to study in a Common Law jurisdiction, as it would enable me to complement my academic and professional background acquired in a Civil Law Jurisdiction. Although studying at a university in the USA was an attractive option, I choose to study in London as it would allow me (and certainly did) to be at the very centre of the world's corporate and capital markets.
Having been accepted by other Russel Group Universities, I opted for QMUL School of Law due to the excellent academic level offered by CCLS and its unsurpassed specialised programmes. I was able to tailor my LLM programme as a large selection of modules were on offer and take advantage of the teachings and advice of highly qualified academics such as Profs. Mistelis, Rix and Olivares-Caminal.
Throughout my academic year, I have certainly broadened my understanding of corporate law, but also got to appreciate the drivers and barriers, which influence the business environment and corporate decision-making processes. My experience studying at CCLS has definitely made a difference and enabled me to join the Finance Group of Shearman & Sterling.
If I were to give a piece of advice to future cohorts, I would tell them to take advantage of every opportunity provided by the university to meet new people and enlarge your network. I am convinced that relationships are crucial and certainly make the difference. Something that I learnt during my academic year, marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, is that sometimes you need to forget whether you are the one who is engaging the conversation first and be less shy as this will enable you to build long lasting professional and personal relationships in a shorter time.
