What influenced your decision to choose a LLM at Queen Mary?

My decision to pursue a LLM from Queen Mary was based on facets like diversity and inclusiveness which the university offers in terms of its curriculum as well as the diverse cohort of students that come to London to pursue a LLM from across the globe. Another factor was the geographical location of Queen Mary. London is the hub of International Arbitration and is renowned for being a diverse city and for its rich social culture. These factors made Queen Mary a viable option for an LLM.

I wanted to gain an expertise and specialisation in International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution, Queen Mary is one of the few universities in the world that had a specialised LLM programme which focused particularly in this area of the law. The School of International Arbitration has been setup by Queen Mary and it further provides legitimacy and strengthens the credibility of the LLM programme. The professors and the teaching staff are one of the leading academicians, practitioners and scholars in terms of their academic credentials as well as in their professional experience in International Arbitration, Commercial Law and Dispute Resolution.

How did you find the teaching and learning?

One of the most productive and cherished experiences that I gained during my time at Queen Mary was the interactive nature of lectures. The manner in which the professors conducted these was quite comprehensive and efficient. There were small group teaching sessions that were held which further assisted me to have a firm grip on the concepts that were taught during lectures from a practical point of view. I had the opportunity to study modules from other specialisations as well since Queen Mary gives its students an opportunity to broaden their horizons by providing them the liberty to study modules from other LLM specialisations so as to have a diverse and varied understanding of law.

Has gaining a deeper understanding of your specialisation helped your career?

During my LLM I was able to expand my knowledge and obtain valuable insights on the practical application of the theoretical aspects in International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution. Such insights were invaluable and facilitated me to have a deeper understanding of international arbitration and better prepare me for my future as a dispute resolution practitioner. I am grateful that I chose Queen Mary to further enhance my profile by pursuing a specialised LLM programme which has certainly given me an all-round international perspective of law.

What piece of insight or advice would you offer for future students?

I would strongly recommend and advise all future students to thoroughly research and make up their mind about pursuing an LLM. Since it’s just a one year long programme, make the most if it. Interact in lectures and forge meaningful relationships with the professors and your LLM cohort. Queen Mary hosts and organises academic networking events, careers fairs, and guest lectures on prominent topics in law. Students should participate, network and engage in these events so that they can take advantage and utilise their time at Queen Mary to its full potential.
