The reason I chose to pursue an LLM at Queen Mary is its world-renowned program in Comparative and International Dispute Resolution, which is considered one of the best postgraduate programs specialising in alternative dispute resolution globally. Prior to joining the program, I had been working in the field of national dispute resolution for three years, but I wanted to enter the world of international arbitration to which I have always been drawn to. Because of the school’s reputation in the field of international arbitration and its location in London as one of the major dispute resolution hubs in the world, Queen Mary was an obvious choice for me.
What I enjoyed the most while studying at Queen Mary was the approach of the professors, who were always willing to have an open discussion with students and encouraged us to form our own ideas and to think critically, rather than always giving the ‘correct’ answer for every problem or scenario discussed in class. I also appreciated the guest lectures given by the leading practitioners in the field as well as numerous networking opportunities with lawyers from major law firms organised by Queen Mary. Combined with Queen Mary’s truly international community of students and lecturers, these really made my experience memorable.
My studies at Queen Mary definitely helped me to understand some of the nuances of the international arbitration that are valuable for my future practice. Also, due to the networking events and extra-curricular activities, I significantly expanded my professional network, which ultimately helped me to score my first job in international arbitration.
The one piece of advice I would give to the future students is to make use of all the networking and extra-curricular opportunities that Queen Mary has to offer (such as moot court competitions, legal clinics, etc.).
