Applying to QMUL for the LLM in Commercial Arbitration was a happy accident. I was seeking to resuscitate a dormant law career and considered a Master’s would help test my intellectual capacity. Scouring the internet I came across www.findamasters.com, which upon filtering led me to QMUL.
Being in full time employment at the time of application, involving weekend and shift work, meant that physically attending any course was nigh on impossible. The concept of distance learning seemed to tick all the right boxes for my predicament. Guided by a course advisor, the application process was smooth and highly informative. I felt perfectly taken care of. Once given an unconditional offer, I was both nervous and excited.
What struck me on beginning the course was the exceptional online layout and tutor interaction. It mattered not that there was no physical attendance, the quality and intellectual challenge was all you would expect from a Russell Group institution. Bar the obvious pressures of exams and coursework deadlines, the delivery of the teaching incorporating webinars, online forums and extensive reading, was easily shaped to fit my working life.
Without reservation, the dissertation was a key highlight. It enabled me to delve deeply into a favourite topic of mine, that of delocalisation theory. At the research stage, I reached out to some world renowned scholars in the field of arbitration and was honoured to receive some very insightful articles. Coupled with the encouragement and constant challenge from my personal tutor, made the experience particularly memorable.
The experience distance learning with QMUL has had a profound effect on me. It has been life changing. An immense amount of pride can be drawn from learning and achieving. Meeting others from across the globe and sharing on such a first class educational platform, is so rewarding. It has made me really want to be part of championing distance learning at QMUL. For me it made dreams a reality.
