Queen Mary is renowned for its excellence in teaching.
I thoroughly enjoyed the teaching and learning at Queen Mary. Whilst most of my modules were remote due to the pandemic, we made it work. The lecturers are very supportive, and it was nice to engage as a class with the lecturer during our small group teaching sessions.
I enjoyed my internship with the Aire Centre. I chose the Migration and Asylum Law Through Practice module and applied for a position to intern with the Aire Centre. I was selected and invited for an interview. I began a 12-week internship which has enabled me to gain experience in another area of law as well as develop my skills. I worked on cases that dealt with protecting individual rights under EU Law. I gained a sound knowledge of immigration rules under the Appendix EU which was outside of my area of expertise. Overall, it was a great experience, and certainly a highlight for me during my LLM. It was great to have an opportunity to gain practical experience on the LLM.
On the LLM we get to have free choice module option. I was able to choose other modules which were of interest to me. For example, the US State Law and Practice was an interesting module. I gained knowledge on US Contract and Tort law. The advantage of combining modules is that you get to have your specialism whilst choosing modules that you are curious about. In the end the modules that I combined with my specialisation are areas of law that can be used in my future career. It is worth choosing other modules if they interest you.
Enjoy your LLM and make the most of your time at Queen Mary because before you know it you are about to graduate. Keep on top of the reading, and do not be afraid to ask for help. The lecturers are extremely helpful and will answer your questions, so do ask! Has gaining a deeper understanding of your specialisation helped your career?
I am finishing my dissertation this summer, so I have not officially completed the LLM programme. I am seeking pupillage and aim to have a career at the Bar. The knowledge that I have gained of my specialisation will be useful for me in my future career.
