Choosing Queen Mary University was a no-brainer. It is part of the Russel Group of Universities and one of the top law schools within the UK. I was sure that I wanted to pursue a career in Technology Laws, and the program stood out for me. This is because CCLS is one of the very few Schools in the country to offer an LLM specialisation in Technology, Media, and Telecommunications Laws. It is a unique program that dives into the technology sector by analysing how technology, media, and telecommunications law affect the application of modern-day and traditional legal principles.
With a deep-rooted interest in Technology Laws, I focused my module selection around legal regimes surrounding technology which includes ‘EU Data Protection Laws’, ‘E-commerce Regulation’, ‘Legal Tech’, ‘AI, Robotics and the Law amongst others. I can affirm that CCLS is home to some of the most renowned professors who are pioneers in their field of expertise and have various books and publications to their credit. The ethos of quality is seen with every interaction with the professors be it during lectures or discussions through an informal setting.
Furthermore, the university allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge gained within the classrooms and use it in real-life scenarios through ‘qLegal’ - their pro-bono legal clinic. This program simulates that of an innovative commercial law firm where students are either given the opportunity to be legal advisors, public legal educators or the opportunity to undertake specific consultancy projects. Having been selected as a ‘student legal advisor’, I was given the opportunity to interview and provide preliminary advice to real start-ups and entrepreneurs under the guidance of qualified solicitors.
I was offered accommodation by Queen Mary at one of their halls of residence. The unique selling point is that this is accommodation for solely postgraduate students. I have had the privilege to meet diverse individuals from all over the world who bring a plethora of diversity through their cultures, opinions and interests.
Through qLegal; networking events; seminars and workshops, the University allows me to hone my skills as a lawyer and provides me with a practical understanding of the law. I am confident that sharing this space with my colleagues and professors combined with the ample opportunities CCLS provides, will develop me not only academically, but also personally. I cannot wait to see what the rest of my time here holds.
It is said when life gives you lemons, find the person life gave water to and become a team. Then, find the person life gave sugar to and become a family. Thus, a recipe for a perfect lemonade. Invest time with your professors, colleagues and go outside your comfort zone by saying yes to every opportunity. I leave you with this food for thought to use and craft a perfect story with all the opportunities available to you at this prestigious university.
